It is the intention of Healthwatch East Sussex to visit all the care homes in East Sussex over the next three years as part of wider engagement plan. This report brings together the findings from our second wave of visits involving care homes providing nursing care.

This report presents a snapshot of interactions between Healthwatch East Sussex Authorised Representatives and patients, relatives, carers and staff including Ambulance staff. This work was carried out over a 24-hour period in Eastbourne District General Hospital and the Conquest Hospital in Hastings and over 12 hours at Bexhill Community Hospital.

During a two week period during November 2016, Healthwatch East Sussex’s Authorised Representatives (ARs) visited two wards in the Trust to observe the care frail elderly patients receive. The visits were unplanned and were designed to capture the interactions between staff and patients as a visitor or relative might experience.

This report summarises the activities that took place during the Healthwatch East Sussex Red Bus Tour 2016 and identifies some useful learning for the planning of future events.

A number of care homes in East Sussex have been rated as inadequate by the Care Quality Commission, following their inspections. A sizeable number have also been rated as ‘requires improvement’, which is the rating one up from inadequate.

This report is presented as a timeline of interactions with patients, relatives, carers and some staff, over 24 hours in both the acute hospitals in Hastings and Eastbourne. The report describes how patients experience various departments, commissioned services or pathways; and importantly the interplay between them.

A patient’s perspective of their road to treatment

Between April and May 2015, East Sussex Community Voice, through its Healthwatch East Sussex functions carried out a piece of work to investigate access to Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)1 for children, young people, their carer’s and other relevant organisations.

This report brings together a summary of what Healthwatch found out during its journey looking at how mental health services in East Sussex meet the needs of local people.
