Building work starts at the Park Centre to improve cancer care

Building work has started on a new Radiotherapy Centre that will enable more patients to be treated quicker. The centre, funded by Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, is being built at The Park Centre, Preston Park in Brighton and is expected to be completed in December 2015.

The centre will have two Tomotherapy machines, which are state-of-the-art units that use high energy x-rays to treat a patient’s tumor. The service will be a satellite unit of the radiotherapy centre operated by the Sussex Cancer Centre, based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, and the additional radiotherapy machines will allow more patients to be treated in a more timely way.

Julie Warner, Head of Radiotherapy at the Sussex Cancer Centre, said: “This will be a fantastic facility for our patients and staff. Our Cancer Team’s ambition is to vastly improve our patient experience and deliver best quality treatment and this unit is our first step to delivering this across Sussex.”

The Cancer Centre services patients across Sussex and undertakes over 17,000 oncology outpatient appointments, 9,000 chemotherapy episodes and over 33,000 radiotherapy attendances every year.
