What is the Post-COVID Assessment and Support Service (PCASS)?

The Post-COVID Assessment and Support Service (PCASS) provides care for people who have long COVID symptoms which are significantly impacting on their daily life.

What is long COVID?

Long COVID is the description given to someone whose symptoms after having COVID-19 last four weeks or longer. Symptoms may affect different people in different ways at different times.

Common symptoms of long COVID can include (but are not limited to):

  • Extreme tiredness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Muscle ache/joint ache
  • Difficulty concentrating/memory loss/confusion
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Headache
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Worry/anxiety
  • Fast heart rate

How can I get help with long COVID?

If you have new or worsening symptoms following COVID-19 that have been present for four weeks or longer, then you can contact your GP practice to discuss your symptoms.

Your GP may make a diagnosis of long COVID after excluding other potential causes for your symptoms.

If you have long COVID symptoms that are affecting your ability to carry out normal daily activities, your GP can refer you to the long COVID support service (PCASS).

You can also find information and advice on the NHS ‘Your COVID Recovery’ website.

How can I access the Post-COVID Assessment and Support Service (PCASS)?

A referral from your GP, nurse or another health professional is required, and this can occur after you have been experiencing symptoms for four weeks or more, and other potential causes have been ruled out.

PCASS is a virtual service with face-to-face support as needed. Once a referral has been accepted, the PCASS team will contact you to confirm the referral and offer self-management information.

The PCASS service is run by a team of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Psychologists and other healthcare professionals, who can help you to manage some of your symptoms and work towards feeling better.
