What is podiatry?

Podiatrists specialise in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions of the foot and ankle.

This can include issues related to diabetes, wound care, musculoskeletal (MSK) foot and ankle conditions, nail surgery, and neurological, vascular and rheumatoid conditions.

Podiatrists may also refer appropriate patients to other specialist pathways as part of their treatment plans.

What podiatry services are available in East Sussex?

East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (ESHT) provide NHS podiatry clinics in venues across East Sussex, including at Health Centres and Community Hospitals, as well as at patients own homes (for housebound patients) or as part of inpatient care (during a hospital stay).

Podiatry is also available privately as a paid-for service.

Who can access NHS podiatry?

If your foot condition affects your health or mobility, or has been caused by a medical condition, you may be able to have a routine podiatry appointment on the NHS, via the ESHT podiatry service.

Eligibility is based on medical need and the level of risk associated with a foot problem or medical condition.

Toenail cutting and treatment of minor corns and callus are not provided long term to patients with no specific medical conditions.

How can I access NHS podiatry?

You can complete a self-referral using this  online form.

Alternatively, you can be referred to podiatry via a GP, consultant or other healthcare professional.  All referrals are triaged and prioritised according to clinical need.

What if I’m not eligible for NHS podiatry?

If you do not have a medical condition that means you are eligible to access NHS podiatry services, there are private practitioners in the area that will be able to assist you with your foot problem.

We recommend you find out the cost of private treatment prior to booking an appointment.
