Dying Matters Awareness Week 2022
As part of Dying Matters Awareness Week Healthwatch East Sussex invited Dr. Jane Lewington Consultant in Palliative Medicine East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust St. Michael’s Hospice, Hastings to talk to a group of our staff, volunteers and Board members about ReSPECT on Tuesday 3rd May.
Dying Matters Awareness Week from 2 – 6 May 2022 is about bringing communities across the country together to talk about death, dying and bereavement. Part of those discussions is about how ReSPECT forms in the community and hospitals enable those sensitive discussions with individuals and families to take place when planning for emergency care and treatment – see Joe’s Story here which is available on the Resuscitation Council UK website.
It is important for our volunteers as they start to reengage with services and the public to understand some of the key issues facing local people, particularly when their care and treatment options become reduced and conversations become more difficult to know what is involved and how they can be supported.
Following a short presentation on the ReSPECT process including information on how the process puts people and those important to them at the heart of the decision-making process and what’s involved; we had lots of opportunities to ask questions and discuss some of the very emotional content. We would like to extend our thanks to Dr Jane Lewington for joining us and covering such a difficult topic so compassionately and raising all our awareness levels.
